How 'losing' the Tiny Desk Contest launched Yasmin Williams' music career
February 19, 2025 • Northern Virginia guitarist Yasmin Williams shares how the Tiny Desk Contest changed her life — despite entering it twice and never winning.
Thousands of entries. One winner.
We're excited to name Little Moon as the winner of the 2023 Tiny Desk Contest.
Led by singer-songwriter Emma Hardyman’s soaring vocals and intricate arrangements, Little Moon is a Utah band that mixes folk, pop and indie rock. The group’s powerful Tiny Desk Contest winning entry, “Wonder Eye,” is about how “accepting the mysterious, shadowy nature of death can deepen one's sense of humanity and soften the ways we see ourselves and each other.”
NPR Music's Bobby Carter and Contest judge Baby Rose announced the winner on Morning Edition.
Later that day, Little Moon spoke with NPR's Ari Shapiro on All Things Considered.
“Little Moon’s 'Wonder Eye' was a clear and unanimous winner amongst our judges and for a good reason. The song is a dynamic and explosive tune with a deeply emotional story.”
“Emma’s deceptively strong voice and the band's ability to take the music to places completely unexpected catapulted 'Wonder Eye' to the top of the heap of wonderful entries.”
"Since the first moment I saw Little Moon performing 'Wonder Eye,' I felt the magic that only good songs could give. An unforgettable voice, emotional melodies and a great full band. Well-deserved winners."
“It was so hard to pick from the amazing submissions, but this performance was so special and it was unanimous in the group. Beautiful performance and build. Vocal range out of this world.”
"Little Moon is ethereal, 'Wonder Eye' sounds like what it’s like to float in an endless sky. Their win is well deserved."
"We went through so many great videos from artists, but Little Moon just kept coming to the forefront because they had all the factors — uniqueness, musicality, stage presence — they had it all."
